LILLIAN BASSMAN

Lillian Bassman was an American photographer known for her black-and-white fashion and fine art photos. She started as a fashion illustrator and later became a fashion photographer for Harper's Bazaar. Her dramatic lighting and graphic elements made her one of the most sought-after photographers. During the 1950s, Bassman experimented with bleaching and burning negatives for more abstract and expressionistic images. Her work was dreamlike and used light and shadow to set the mood and atmosphere. After a break due to disillusionment with the fashion industry, a new generation rediscovered her work in the 1990s. She was a trailblazer in representing female models, and her photos celebrated their sensuality. Bassman's work has been displayed worldwide in galleries and museums and is part of major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
