Biography of Latifa Echakhch
Latifa Echakhch was born in 1974 in El Khnansa, Morocco. When she was three, her family moved to France.
Echakhch's artistic journey began with formal training at prestigious institutions, including the École supérieure d’Art de Grenoble. Later, she earned degrees from the National School of Arts Cergy-Pontoise and the Lyon National School of Fine Arts. Echakhch initiated her studio practice in 2001.
In 2007, the artist debuted "A chaque stencil une révolution" at Le Magasin in Grenoble, marking her first solo museum exhibition. The work was subsequently exhibited at prominent venues including the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, the Pinault Collection in Venice, and Tate Modern in London.
Echakhch's accolades include the prestigious Marcel Duchamp Prize, France's highest honor in the arts, awarded to her in 2013.
In 2015, she unveiled "Screen Shot" at the Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zurich, coinciding with her receipt of the Zurich Art Prize. The installation featured a labyrinth of canvas panels forming paravents, adorned with the artist's clothes soaked in Indian ink and towering carnival figures.
Latifa Echakhch's solo exhibitions include "Les Albatros" at Pace Gallery in Seoul (2024), "Latifa Echakhch: ricordi di campo" at Kaufmann Repetto in Milan (2023), "Latifa Echakhch: The Concert" Swiss Pavilion, Venice Biennale (2022), and many more.
Currently, the artist resides in the Swiss cities of Martigny and Vevey.
