Ludovic Nkoth

By merging Cameroonian aesthetic elements, vibrant colors, and post-colonial allegories, Ludovic Nkoth investigates the formation and fragmentation of identity in his art.

Biography of Ludovic Nkoth

Ludovic Nkoth was born in Yaoundé, Cameroon, in 1994 and currently resides and works in New York City. He earned a BFA from the University of South Carolina and holds an MFA in painting from Hunter College.

As an artist originally from Cameroon, now making his home in the United States, Ludovic Nkoth brings a distinctive perspective to his art, infusing it with his personal experiences as a Black immigrant in a foreign land. His practice seamlessly merges art and introspection, with each piece serving as a mirror reflecting his contemplations on family history, tradition, and the enduring legacy of colonialism, which continues to influence Black lives today.

The artist's notable solo exhibitions include "Transferred Memories (Work No Dey)" (2022) at Massimo de Carlo Gallery in London and "Don't Take This Too" (2021) at François Ghebaly in Los Angeles. Nkoth also participated in the group exhibition "Fire, Figure, Fantasy" (2022) at the ICA Museum in Miami, as well as in group exhibitions at Ross+Kramer in New York and Jeffrey Deitch in LA. His work is part of the collections at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the ICA Museum in Miami.

Ludovic Nkoth's Art Style

Through his figurative paintings, characterized by swirling and meandering brushstrokes, the artist delves into the ongoing negotiation of transatlantic migration, reflecting on diaspora history and his expatriation to the US at the age of 13.

In his artworks, Nkoth's figures engage in both fictional and real experiences that are integral to his process of identity synthesis. Each ambiguous expression and porous boundary in his paintings evokes the gentle glow of distant memories. His work frequently explores the concepts of belonging and outsiderhood in African and American spaces, underscoring his quest to forge connections, foster solidarity, and express self-determination in his artistic practice.

Each of his portraits, thickly layered with impasto, opens a portal into a realm of vivid color and texture. Through his masterful application of distinct shades like pink, red, yellow, blue, and brown, along with fluid squiggles, Ludovic Nkoth transforms a solitary visage into a map of intricacy. With every stroke of his brush, he unveils the beauty and challenges often hidden beneath a mask of stoicism.
