Li Ran
Li Ran's artistic practice spans a variety of mediums, including installation, performance, writing, video, and painting. He employs techniques such as utilizing archival photos, staged photography, vocal mimicry, and sound performance. In recent times, he has delved into research on stage art, make-up design, and the production of translated foreign films, within the framework of contemporary China.
Biography of Li Ran
Li Ran was born in 1986 in Hubei, China. In 2009, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Oil Painting Department at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute.
His artworks were showcased in prominent exhibitions such as the Montreal Biennale (2014), Biennale of Moving Images in Geneva (2014), 2nd CAFAM Biennial in Beijing (2014), 4th 'Former West' Project in Berlin (2013), 9th Gwangju Biennial (2012), and 7th Shenzhen Sculpture Biennale (2012).
In 2015, Li Ran's works were showcased at his solo exhibition at OCAT Contemporary Art Terminal (OCAT) in Xi'an, China. Two years later, in 2017, he received a nomination for the Future Generation Award from the Pinchuk Arts Center in Kyiv, Ukraine.
In 2018, Li Ran decided to leave Beijing and relocated to Shanghai.
His recent solo exhibitions and performance projects include "The Cloister Project - Vortex | Li Ran: The Repetition of Mont Sainte – Victoire" at Macalline Art Centre in Shanghai (2023), "Out of Reach" at Charlottenborg Palace in Copenhagen (2021), "Artists Film Club: Li Ran" at Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London (2015), and many more.
Li Ran has also participated in numerous group exhibitions, including "Killing TV" at Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong (2023), "Painting Unsettled" at UCCA Edge in Shanghai (2023), "The State I Am In" at Caption Petzel in Berlin (2022), "The Infallible Interior: The Third Tour of the Exhibition - Notes for Tomorrow" at Sifang Art Museum in Nanjing (2021), among others.
