Personalities Behind D
DANA LOK
Although born in Berwyn, Pennsylvania, Dana Lok is more known as an artist from New York City. Here, after finishing her studies at Carnegie Mellon University and Columbia University, she started further developing her unique style that combines intricate layers of color, form, and texture with a mix of geometric and organic shapes. Through this approach, Lok questions the connection between structure and chaos, control and spontaneity. Today, although she primarily works in the USA, her painting is exhibited both in the homeland and abroad.
DOROTHEA TANNING
Best known for her surrealist artwork, Dorothea Tanning was a well-known American painter and sculptor of the 20th century. Ultimately, her artistic period could be divided into two periods: pre-war and post-war. During the pre-war era, from 1930 to 1935, she studied painting at Knox College in Galesburg and, after graduation, moved to Chicago, where she worked as a commercial artist. Afterward, she traveled to New York City, where she took part in the Surrealist movement. These events heavily influenced Tanning’s, making surrealism an integral part of her artistic vision.
During the post-war era, especially after moving to France, her works began to incorporate more abstract elements. Tanning started experimenting with sculpture and installations, creating completely new experiences from various materials and techniques. As a result of her unique vision, nowadays, her artworks inspire modern surrealist artists and are exhibited in major museums worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the Tate Modern in London.
DAVID HOCKNEY
Born in the small northern town of Bradford, David has become one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Showing a natural talent for art from a young age, he graduated from the local School of Art and then enrolled in the Royal College of Art in London. There, his artistic vision was influenced for the first time by the works of American abstract expressionists. After graduation, David started his teaching career, moving from place to place and even traveling in the USA to share his wisdom with other aspiring artists.
There, he also started developing his artistic style, working with various mediums like paintings, drawings, prints, and photos. In addition, throughout years spent in the USA, his unique approach to drawing portraits was recognized by the public, captivated by his distinctive visual language and dynamic expressions. As a result, Hockney’s personal and artistic life started blossoming and helped him come out as gay. It gave a spark for the new age in his art, driven by artistic exploration, genuine passion, his identity, and experiences.
