Dr. Lakra
Jerónimo López Ramírez aka Dr. Lakra was born in 1972 in Mexico City. Currently, he lives and works in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Dr. Lakra's Art Style
While Dr. Lakra is most renowned for his drawings and paintings on repurposed posters, erotic magazines, and postcards, he extends his practice to include mural painting, collage, and sculpture.
In addition to tattooing, his artistic endeavors include enhancing discovered images and objects, such as dolls, vintage medical illustrations, and pictures from 1950s Mexican magazines, with macabre or tattoo-style designs.
Dr. Lakra's visual vocabulary draws inspiration from myths and idols, cartoons and toys, art history, and folklore. The juxtaposition of objects with intense iconographic power results in sculptures and images reminiscent of secular votives, evoking the essence of surrealist collage and ancient archetypal artifacts. This amalgamation of histories highlights the contrast between ancient human culture and the transience of contemporary experience.
