Biography of Dave Muller

Dave Muller was born in 1964 in San Francisco, USA. He pursued his education at the School of Visual Arts, Fine Arts Graduate Program in New York in 1991. He earned a BA and Science degree from the University of California in Davis. He completed an MFA at the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia in 1993.

His work has been prominently featured in numerous exhibitions across the United States and internationally, showcasing his artistic vision to diverse audiences worldwide. His solo shows include "Sunset, Sunrise (repeat) b/w The Record Pavilion" at Blum & Poe in Los Angeles (2022), "Sex & Death & Rock & Roll" at Blum & Poe in New York (2018), "Now Where Were We" at  Minneapolis Institute of Art in Minneapolis (2016), "Everything Sounds Good Right Now" at Bob Rauschenberg Gallery in Fort Myers (2015), and many more.

Additionally, Muller's works have been featured in group exhibitions held at various galleries and museums, including Michael Benevento in Los Angeles, Gallery 12.26 in Dallas, Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University in Durham, Kerry Schuss in New York, Vanhaerents Art Collection in Brussels, Centre Culturel Suisse in Paris, Galerie Frank Elbaz in Paris, Anthony Meier Fine Arts in San Francisco, among other esteemed venues.

Currently, the artist lives and works in Los Angeles.

Dave Muller's Art Style

Exploring shared poetic moments and collective dialogue, Muller portrays the diverse iconography of his musical passions. His artworks feature album covers, vinyl records, tapes, CDs, bootlegs, B-sides, disco balls, record labels, set lists, and a variety of instruments—celebrating sounds of all genres, alongside revered and lesser-known musicians and singers.

He skillfully incorporates album art into his paintings, blending a whimsical yet precise painterly style. His works are autobiographical and emotive, simultaneously reverent and historically informed. Detail-oriented, Muller includes elements like hype stickers, outdated price tags, and extinct record shop labels, meticulously capturing the passage of time, usage, and aging. Through these paintings, he weaves idiosyncratic narratives that reflect the evolving landscapes of politics, subcultures, and atmospheres across different eras and cultures.
