Miguel Benlloch

Miguel Benlloch was an artist, poet, and social activist born in Loja, Granada, Spain, in 1954. Throughout four dynamic decades of social activism, Benlloch created an eclectic and daring body of work while vehemently rejecting the heterocentric norms imposed by the system he fought against.

Biography of Miguel Benlloch

Miguel Benlloch was a prominent figure in the Homosexual Liberation Front of Andalusia (FLHA) during the 1960s and 1980s. He was actively involved in communist movements and opposed NATO. Benlloch's work reflects his social and political activism and is known for rejecting heterocentric categories imposed by the system he fought against.

In 1983, along with Juan Antonio Peinado and Marino Martín, Benlloch co-founded the Planta Baja concert hall in Granada, which became a vibrant hub for artistic expression. From 1986 to 1994, he played a pivotal role in the CUTRE CHOU group, known for their whimsical cabaret shows that challenged societal norms.

In 1988, Benlloch took another significant step in his creative journey as a founding member of BNV Producciones. A pivotal moment arrived in 2001 when he assumed the role of coordinator and producer for the research program UNIA Arte y Pensamiento at the International University of Andalusia (UNIA), a position he held until 2015. During this time, his impact on the cultural landscape continued to grow.

Miguel Benlloch died in Seville in 2018.

In recent years, Miguel Benlloch's art has been the subject of several exhibitions. Curated by Mar Villaespesa and Joaquín Vázquez, this presentation, titled "Miguel Benlloch: Cuerpo conjugado," took place in 2019 at CentroCentro, located in the heart of Madrid.

In 2020, the art world was treated to the exhibition "Miguel Benlloch: Cuerpo conjugado." This thought-provoking showcase found its home at the historic Hospital Real in Granada. Undoubtedly, Miguel Benlloch's work left an indelible mark on those who had the privilege to experience it.

In 2021, there was an exciting exhibition titled "Ensayos sobre lo cutre. Lecturas del archivo de Miguel Benlloch," curated by a trio of creative minds - Mar Villaespesa, Joaquín Vázquez, and Alejandro Simón.
