Chrysanne Stathacos
Born in New York in 1951, Chrysanne Stathacos is an artist of Greek, American, and Canadian heritage who currently resides and works in Toronto and Athens, Greece.
Stathacos often explores themes of spirituality, ritual, and healing in her work, drawing inspiration from diverse traditions such as Buddhism, Hinduism, and Native American shamanism. Her art is also informed by her interest in ecology and environmental activism. The main focus of Chrysanne Stathacos' art is the exploration of transformation, ritual, and the relationship between nature and the human psyche. She works across different mediums including performance, sculpture, and installation, often incorporating natural materials such as flowers and plants into her work.
During the 1990s AIDS crisis, Stathacos' art became heavily involved in body politics, with a focus on sexuality and gender. Her work aimed to connect themes of the body, environment, and the future, with her pieces from this era reflecting a crucial point in her artistic career.
Stathacos has exhibited her works in galleries and museums worldwide, including the Brooklyn Museum, MoMA in New York, and the Venice Biennale. She has collaborated with artists such as Yoko Ono and Marina Abramovic and received awards from Art Matters, the Japan Foundation, the Canada Council, and the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation.
