Barrão
Barrão is a Brazilian artist known for his eclectic and experimental approach to art-making.
Barrão's Art Style
Barrão creates sculptures using ingenious and lighthearted bricolage techniques. These sculptures are crafted from glazed ceramic and porcelain fragments collected by the artist over at least two decades, deliberately broken in his studio. Pieces of teacups, plates, vases, souvenirs, and similar items are reassembled, fused together to form hybrid, expansive beings that transcend their original functions. Once assembled, these pieces lose their utilitarian or recognizable qualities, becoming artworks that defy conventional decorative logic. Instead, they evoke the typical aesthetics of kitsch—exaggeration, humor, and an unconventional charm.
In the 1980s, Barrão was part of the "Geração 80" or "Generation of '80" movement in Brazil, which marked a significant shift in Brazilian art towards a more diverse and pluralistic approach.
Today, Barrão's work continues to push boundaries and challenge conventions. He remains a prominent figure in the Brazilian art scene and has exhibited his work in galleries and museums around the world.
Art Collective Chelpa Ferro
Besides Barrão is an integral member of the art collective Chelpa Ferro, which he co-founded in 1995 alongside Brazilian artists Sergio Mekler and Luiz Zerbini. The group's diverse body of work explores the dynamic relationship between sound and sculpture, incorporating everyday objects into their installations, sculptures, and music performances.
