Zheng Zhou
Zheng Zhou is a Chinese contemporary artist who is known for his multimedia works that incorporate painting, sculpture, installation, and performance. He was born in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China and currently lives and works in Beijing.
Zheng's work often explores themes related to cultural identity, globalization, and urbanization. He uses a variety of materials and techniques to create works that are both visually striking and intellectually engaging.
One of Zheng's most well-known works is "The History of Chinese Painting and A Concise History of Modern Painting Washed in a Washing Machine for Two Minutes" (1999), which is a video installation that juxtaposes images of classical Chinese paintings and modern art with the mechanical process of a washing machine. The work is intended to critique the commodification and commercialization of art.
In addition to his artistic practice, Zheng is also a curator and writer. He has curated numerous exhibitions in China and abroad, and has published several essays and books on contemporary art.
Zheng's work has been exhibited widely internationally, including at the Venice Biennale, the Shanghai Biennale, and the Moscow Biennale. He has received numerous awards and grants, including the Chinese Contemporary Art Award for Best Artist in 2004.
