Maria Hassabi
Maria Hassabi is a contemporary artist and choreographer born in Cyprus in 1973. She is best known for her works that explore stillness, minimalism, and the relationship between the body and space. Hassabi's work often blurs the boundaries between dance, sculpture, and visual art.
Hassabi studied dance in the United States and received a BFA in Dance from California Institute of the Arts in 1995. She then moved to New York City where she began creating her own works, collaborating with other artists and performing in various venues.
In 2001, Hassabi founded her own dance company, Maria Hassabi Dance, which has presented her works in numerous venues and festivals worldwide. Her notable works include "Plastic" (2015), "STAGING: solo#2" (2017), and "TOGETHER" (2019).
Hassabi has received numerous awards and honors for her work, including the Bessie Award for Outstanding Production for her piece "PREMIERE" in 2016. Her work has also been exhibited in various galleries and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
Hassabi continues to create innovative works that challenge traditional notions of dance and performance, and she is regarded as one of the leading figures in contemporary dance and performance art.
