Biography of Will Benedict

Will Benedict was born in 1978 in Los Angeles, the United States. From 1999 to 2004, he studied at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. Later, he furthered his education at Staedelschule in Frankfurt/Main, which he attended from 2004 to 2006.

Will Benedict's works are showcased by numerous galleries worldwide, spanning countries like Italy, the United States, and Germany. His recent solo exhibitions include "Throwing Bodies at the Problem" at dépendance in Brussels (2024), "Pandemonium" (musical performance) at Bourse de la Commerce in Paris (2023), "Dialogue of the Dogs" at Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève in Geneva (2022), "Idéal Pain" at Basement Roma in Rome (2022), and many more.

The artist has also participated in group exhibitions held at prestigious venues, including Fondazione MAST, Sifang Art Museum, Belgrade Biennal, Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Art Center Sonje, Freedman Fitzpatrick, Berlin Biennale, among others. 

Currently, Will Benedict resides in Paris, where he continues to work.

Will Benedict's Art Style 

Employing a process involving deconstruction, hybridization, and the reassembly of imagery, Will Benedict utilizes a range of media—from painting to video, drawing to photography, to curating exhibition projects—to explore the fundamental elements of representation and the various methods of interpreting and framing it, both visually and conceptually. The diverse composition and materiality of his works, often marked by the coexistence of multiple semiotic layers, evoke a sense of engaged ambivalence.

Particularly noteworthy are his video creations, which present worlds that challenge the conventions of popular entertainment codes and the avant-garde norms embedded in music videos, fashion spreads, YouTube tutorials, magazines, advertising, television, and film.
