Gillian Carnegie
Gillian Carnegie, a contemporary British artist, is renowned for her naturalistic and tonal paintings encompassing still lifes, portraiture, figure studies, and landscapes. Despite her moody, vernacular subject matter, her work serves as a contrast to the formal exploration she undertakes with each painting, pushing the boundaries of representation toward abstraction.
Biography of Gillian Carnegie
Gillian Carnegie was born in 1971 in Suffolk, England. She attended the Ipswich School of Art in Suffolk, where she obtained her BTEC Diploma in Art and Design. Later, Carnegie studied at the Camberwell School of Art and the Royal College of Art.
She was shortlisted for the 2005 Turner Prize. Additionally, in 2013, Carnegie showcased her work at Tate Britain as part of the exhibition "Painting Now: Five Contemporary Artists."
In 2018, Gillian Carnegie held the position of a Teaching Fellow in Fine Art Painting at The Slade School of Fine Art, University College London.
Her recent solo exhibitions have been held at numerous venues such as Galerie Gisela Capitain, dépendance, Cabinet, and Andrea Rosen Gallery. Carnegie has also participated in group exhibitions, including "The Sky Is Thin. Drawings" at Standard in Oslo (2023), "Drawing 2020" at Gladstone Gallery in New York (2020), "Room enough for teasers" at Galerie Gisela Capitain in Cologne (2020), "J U N E" at dépendance in Brussels (2020), among others.
Currently, Carnegie's paintings are held in the collections of Tate (UK), the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) (USA), the Government Art Collection (UK), the Arts Council Collections (UK), and the San Diego Museum of Contemporary Art (USA).
