Maria “Lulu” Varona

Maria Lulu Varona, also known as 'lulu', is a Puerto Rican artist based in both Puerto Rico and New York City. She learned embroidery techniques from her grandmother, which she incorporates into her works that address contemporary conditions. Varona has exhibited at various galleries and art fairs, including Bronx Art Space in New York, Roberto Paradise in San Juan, Puerto Rico, and MACO Feria de Arte in Mexico City. She has also participated in art residencies such as the International Studio and Curatorial Program in Brooklyn, Flux Factory in Queens, and the Program for Independent Studies at the Contemporary Arts Museum of Puerto Rico. Varona's cross-stitched narratives explore existential questions, time, our relationship with the environment, and ourselves. She also enjoys playing music and performing with her friends.
