Malek Gnaoui
Malek Gnaoui's art explores themes of social conditions and the concept of human sacrifice. Employing various mediums including video, ceramics, printmaking, installation, sound, and performance, he has developed an alternative artistic practice that melds everyday materials with traditional techniques. For instance, he grinds bricks into powder to create lithography pigment and integrates powdered brick into clay to sculpt pieces with a distinct quality. Malek Gnaoui, born in 1983 in Gabes, Tunisia, and now residing and creating in Tunis, Tunisia, stands as a poignant voice in the realm of contemporary art.
Gnaoui's journey in the world of art began with his education at the L’Ecole d’Art et de Décoration in Tunis, where he honed his skills and refined his artistic vision. Further training at the National Ceramic Centre of Sidi Kacem Jéliz provided him with additional tools and techniques to expand his creative repertoire.
In recent years, Gnaoui has captivated audiences with his ambitious projects and exhibitions showcased in prestigious venues around the globe. From the Dom Museum in Vienna, Austria, to the Dream City festival in Tunis, Tunisia, his works have left an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene.
Recent solo exhibitions include "Essaïda-Carthage: Between the Past and the Future," curated by Matthieu Lelièvre (2020), "Fabrica 0464" at Selma Feriani Gallery in Sidi Bou Said (2015), "Abattoir" at Selma Feriani Gallery in London (2014), and many more.
