Joanna Woś's Art Style
In her compositions, Joanna Woś skillfully incorporates contemporary material sourced from stock photos and elements of pornographic footage. By integrating these diverse visual sources, she adds layers of complexity and thought-provoking juxtapositions to her artwork.
Joanna Woś's debut solo exhibition, titled "Precious and Tender," held at Galerie Croy Nielsen, showcased a series of captivating grisaille oil paintings that revolved around the portrayal of a naked body.
The exhibition presented viewers with multi-perspective, dream-like imagery, where the central female nude was surrounded by clothed individuals. Through her masterful brushwork and composition, Joanna Woś created a visual dialogue that stirred the viewer's emotions, evoking questions about vulnerability, power dynamics, and the complexities of human relationships.
"Precious and Tender" served as a powerful introduction to Joanna's artistic prowess, demonstrating her ability to capture raw emotions and engage the audience in a thought-provoking exploration of the human form. Her skillful manipulation of light, texture, and perspective breathed life into the enigmatic scenes, inviting viewers to reflect on the inherent tension between tenderness and violence, intimacy and detachment.
In her thought-provoking artwork, Joanna Woś employs a large-format, unprimed canvas as a reference to El Greco's painting "The Holy Trinity" (ca. 1577-1579). Within this context, Woś creates a composition where a naked female body is surrounded by predominantly male figures dressed in suit-like robes. The artist deliberately draws inspiration from El Greco's iconic piece, infusing it with her own reinterpretation.
Woś's artistic approach prompts a deeper examination of the relationship between the artist's body, the artistic process, and the emotional and physical impact conveyed through the artwork.
