J Stoner Blackwell

In Blackwell's latest pieces, titled "Neveruses," they utilize techniques such as embroidery, knitting, weaving, and darning. These methods are combined to construct mask-like objects with irregular shapes. The artworks challenge conventional painting norms by disrupting traditional protocols of form, use, and meaning.   

J Stoner Blackwell's Biography

J Stoner Blackwell was born in New Orleans in 1977. From 1991 to 1995, the artist studied at Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont, graduating with a BA degree. They currently serve as a Faculty Member in Visual Arts at Bennington College.

In 1999, J Stoner Blackwell received an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California.

Since 2004, Blackwell has been accumulating plastic carrier bags, creating a reservoir of material that exists in a liminal space between waste and necessity. Their practice revolves around the transformative use of materials, challenging the conventional perception of items deemed both environmentally toxic and morally compromised.

Throughout their illustrious career, J Stoner Blackwell has been awarded numerous awards, residencies, and fellowships, including:

• 1999 - Residency at Gemini GEL in Los Angeles;
• 2004 - Fellowship from the Corporation of Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, New York;
• 2004-2005 - International Fellowship from Delfina Studios in London;
• 2006 - Fellowship from the Corporation of Yaddo, Saratoga Springs, New York;
• 2014 - Pollock-Krasner Foundation grant;
• 2016 - Residency fellowship from the Josef & Anni Albers Foundation;
• 2020 - Guggenheim Fellowship.

J Stoner Blackwell's works have been exhibited worldwide. Their recent solo exhibitions include "Neveruses: Beyonder" at Bennington Museum in Vermont (2021), "R.O.I./J.O.M.O." at Kate MacGarry in London (2020), and "Neveruses Report Progress" at the Museum of Art and Design in New York (2016). The artist has also participated in group exhibitions, including "TWENTY" at Kate MacGarry in London (2022), "J Stoner Blackwell & Masamitsu Shigeta" at SITUATIONS Gallery in New York (2021), "Plastic Heart: Surface All the Way Through" at the Art Museum at the University of Toronto (2021), and many more.

Currently, J Stoner Blackwell lives and works in Bennington, Vermont, USA.
