J Stoner Blackwell was born in New Orleans in 1977. From 1991 to 1995, the artist studied at Bennington College in Bennington, Vermont, graduating with a BA degree. They currently serve as a Faculty Member in Visual Arts at Bennington College.

In 1999, J Stoner Blackwell received an MFA from the California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California.

Since 2004, Blackwell has been accumulating plastic carrier bags, creating a reservoir of material that exists in a liminal space between waste and necessity. Their practice revolves around the transformative use of materials, challenging the conventional perception of items deemed both environmentally toxic and morally compromised.

Throughout their illustrious career, J Stoner Blackwell has been awarded numerous awards, residencies, and fellowships, including:
