Ed Atkins' Art Style
At the core of Atkins' artistic practice lies a unique fusion of apostrophic text and high-definition video. His work delves into themes of death, decay, and contemporary image management, all channelled through the lens of technology. Utilizing stock footage and CGI avatars animated via motion capture, Atkins creates mesmerizing visual narratives enhanced by dramatic soundscapes.
Central to Atkins' video oeuvre is the presence of computer-generated avatars, often portrayed as solitary figures grappling with existential musings. These avatars, surrounded by generic imagery and cinematic effects, evoke an uncanny valley effect, blurring the lines between reality and digital simulation. In works like "Us Dead Talk Love" (2012), Atkins explores themes of authenticity and self-representation.
Notably, Atkins crafts the majority of his works using a laptop, showcasing a keen interest in the material structure of digital video. Inspired by structural film artists like Hollis Frampton, Atkins continually pushes the boundaries of new media, seamlessly blending technology with artistic expression. His prolific writing serves as a foundation for many of his video projects, adding depth and narrative complexity to his visual creations.
