Celia Hempton
Celia Hempton is a British artist known for her paintings that explore the human body and sexuality. She was born in Stroud, UK in 1981 and currently lives and works in London. Hempton received her BA in Fine Art at the Glasgow School of Art and completed her MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2007.
Hempton has had numerous solo exhibitions, including 'Celia Hempton' at Southard Reid in London in 2020, 'Breach' at Galleria Lorcan O’Neill in Rome in 2018, and 'Lupa' at Galerie Sultana in Paris in 2015. She has also participated in several group exhibitions, such as 'Peinture: Obsolescence déprogrammée' at Musée de l’Hospice Saint-Roch in France in 2022 and 'British Art Show 9', which toured in the UK from 2020-2022.
Hempton's work often features nude figures or body parts, rendered in a loose, gestural style with bold colors and thick brushstrokes. She has also explored themes related to online chat forums and virtual relationships, creating paintings based on screenshots of anonymous users engaged in intimate exchanges. Hempton's works are included in the collections of the British Council, Saatchi Gallery, and Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, among others.
