Aaron Curry's Art Style
Aaron Curry's distinctive totemic sculptures resemble collages, composed of organically shaped, flat elements. These sculptures have a unique 2-dimensional quality that pays homage to a diverse spectrum of artistic styles. Drawing inspiration from the vibrant palettes of Pop art and the distorted planes of Cubism, as well as the biomorphic forms of Surrealism, his creations are a testament to his artistic versatility. An illustrative example of this can be found in his exhibition "Fragments from a Collective Unity" (2018).
During his residency at STPI, Curry embarked on a creative journey, resulting in the production of six series he aptly terms "fragments." These pieces are similar to shards from the ever-expanding cosmos of his artistic oeuvre and visionary concepts.
Presenting the exhibition "Metal Plastic Paint," Aaron Curry delves deeper into the exploration of spatial and material dynamics that exist among various artistic mediums and approaches to creating marks. While specific elements of these pieces—such as the abstract forms they encapsulate and the industrial details of their riveted construction—evoke connections to Alexander Calder's modernist public sculptures, the aluminum craftsmanship preserves a fragile essence of Curry's personal touch. This paradoxically brings forth an immediate sense akin to painting or the handcrafted aesthetics often found in wooden sculptures.
The genesis of these artworks lies in Curry's sketchbook, where initial drawings take form before undergoing digital translation and eventual realization as paper maquettes. Each of the six sculptures, standing on pedestals, orchestrates a bold interplay between two or three colors. The compositions often juxtapose pastels against jewel tones, such as the interplay of matte pink and vibrant turquoise, the harmonious blend of subdued periwinkle and deep eggplant purple, or the striking contrast between heather gray and zesty citrus-hued orange.
