Wang Bing

Biography of Wang Bing

Wang Bing was born in 1967 in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province in China. He studied at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Art and the Beijing Film Academy.

Before embarking on his career as an independent film director in 1998, he worked in television. "West of the Tracks" marks Wang Bing's debut documentary, filmed in 2002, and garnered him numerous awards and grants.

In 2009, Galerie Chantal Crousel hosted Wang Bing's inaugural solo exhibition in Paris, showcasing the screening of two documentary films: "Fengming" and "Man with No Name." Following this, Wang Bing has crafted numerous documentaries, including "Three Sisters" (2012), "TA'ANG" (2016), "Coal Money" (2016), as well as "Mrs Fang" (2017) and "15 Hours" (2017), both featured at Documenta14 in Athens and Kassel.

In 2017, Wang Bing received the Golden Leopard, the top prize in the Concorso Internazionale category at the Locarno Festival, for his film "Mrs Fang." Additionally, he was honored with the EYE Art & Film Prize in Amsterdam, Netherlands, recognizing his remarkable contributions to cinema throughout his career.

Bing's filmography also includes "Man in black" (2023), "Jeunesse (Le Printemps) - Qīngchūn (Chun)" (2023), "Beauty lives in Freedom" (2018), "Dead Souls" (2018), and other works. 

His notable solo exhibitions and retrospectives have been held at prestigious venues worldwide, including  Fondazione MAST, Cercle Cité, MAK – the Museum of Applied Arts, Galerie Art et Essai, Cinémathèque Française,  Centre Pompidou, Take Nikagawa, Kunsthalle Zurich, among others.
