Wang Bing was born in 1967 in Xi'an, Shaanxi Province in China. He studied at the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Art and the Beijing Film Academy.

Before embarking on his career as an independent film director in 1998, he worked in television. "West of the Tracks" marks Wang Bing's debut documentary, filmed in 2002, and garnered him numerous awards and grants.

In 2009, Galerie Chantal Crousel hosted Wang Bing's inaugural solo exhibition in Paris, showcasing the screening of two documentary films: "Fengming" and "Man with No Name."
