Sol Calero
Born in Caracas in 1982, Sol Calero is an artist who studied at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Universidad de la Laguna in Tenerife. She currently resides in Berlin where she co-runs a project space called Kinderhook & Caracas alongside Christopher Kline. Calero's artistic practice centers around ancestry, culture, and the transformation of visual symbols in society. In 2017, she was shortlisted for the Preis der Nationalgalerie and nominated for the Future Generation Art Prize. Her work has been exhibited at various institutions, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki and Tate Liverpool.
Calero's artwork is diverse, spanning a range of media from traditional painting and drawing to found objects, fabric, and site-specific installations. Her interest lies in exploring the ambiguity of cultural signs and the ways in which meanings can proliferate and change. Calero's work is particularly concerned with the connotations that icons acquire in a political and societal context, and how this can affect issues of gender and identity.
Through her artworks, Calero aims to engage the viewer, imitating the cultural signs which she explores, and proliferating meaning.
