Richard Misrach
Richard Misrach is regarded as one of the most influential photographers of his generation, pioneering the use of color photography and large-scale formats in the 1970s.
Richard Misrach's Art Style
For over 50 years, Misrach has captured the ever-changing landscape of the American West with an environmentally conscious and politically astute perspective. His visually captivating, large-scale color vistas compellingly document the devastating ecological impacts of human activity, industrial development, nuclear testing, and petrochemical pollution on the natural world.
One of his most famous series, "Desert Cantos," comprises 40 related groups of pictures that explore the relationship between mankind and nature. This series juxtaposes images of landscapes with scenes of ecological disruption, such as desert fires, nuclear test sites, and animal burial pits. Recent works from this series reflect the political climate post-2016 US presidential election, featuring graffiti messages on abandoned buildings and remote desert locations.
