Moyra Davey
Moyra Davey is a Canadian artist and writer based in New York City. Born in Toronto in 1958, she studied at the University of California, San Diego, and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada.
Davey is known for her work in photography, video, and writing, and often uses personal narratives and everyday objects as subjects. She has exhibited her work internationally at institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, and the ICA in London.
Davey's photographic series "Copperheads" (1990-1991) features close-up images of pennies, while her video work "Les Goddesses" (2011) is a personal reflection on her relationship with her sisters and their shared experiences. In her book "Index Cards" (2017), Davey presents photographs of handwritten index cards that she uses to jot down notes and ideas.
In addition to her artistic practice, Davey is also a respected writer and has published essays and articles on photography, literature, and contemporary art. Her writing has been featured in publications such as Artforum, the London Review of Books, and Frieze.
Davey has been the recipient of numerous awards and honors throughout her career, including a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2016 and the Scotiabank Photography Award in 2018. Her work is held in the collections of major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
