Sohrab Hura
Born on October 17, 1981, in Chinsurah, a small town in West Bengal, India, Sohrab Hura initially had various career aspirations but eventually pursued photography after completing a Masters in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics. In 2005-06, he concurrently produced his first projects, The River, a series exploring three cities along the Ganges River and its tributary, and Land of a Thousand Struggles, which followed a grassroots movement in rural India that led to an important social security act.
Hura's work has been exhibited globally, including upcoming exhibitions in 2019 such as The Levee at Cincinnati Art Museum, The Lost Head & The Bird at True/False Film Festival in Columbia, Missouri, and La Fete Du Slip in Laussane, as well as Snow at Kettle’s Yard in Cambridge, UK. He has also published three books to date: Life is Elsewhere (2015), A Proposition For Departure (2017), and Look It’s Getting Sunny Outside!!! (2018), with a fourth, The Coast, set to be published this year.
Currently based in New Delhi, India, Hura is working on a series called SNOW, which examines Kashmir through the arrival and melting of snow across the three phases of winter. He joined Magnum Photos as a nominee in 2014 and became a member in 2020. Hura is a talented and acclaimed photographer who uses his work to explore his personal experiences and question social issues.
