Meiro Koizumi

Meiro Koizumi is a contemporary Japanese artist who is known for his thought-provoking video installations and performances that explore the themes of power, violence, and trauma. Born in 1976 in Gunma, Japan, Koizumi studied at the International Christian University in Tokyo before pursuing a Master of Fine Arts at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London.

Koizumi's works often involve intense and uncomfortable situations, pushing his subjects to their emotional limits. He often puts his performers in situations where they are asked to confront difficult memories or reenact traumatic experiences. One of his works, Battlelands (2018) features five veterans recounting traumatic experiences during past military conflicts, while wearing body-cams that record images of their current domestic spaces and landscapes in the US. In this work the artist explores how traumatic memories of conflict impact the everyday life of these people.

His recent solo exhibitions include Annet Gelink Gallery (2019 & 2017), Pérez Art Museum Miami (2018), De Hallen, Haarlem (2016), Arts Maebashi, Maebashi (2015), Kadist Art Foundation, Paris (2014), Museum of Modern Art, New York (2013), Centro de Arte de Caja de Burgos (CAB), Burgos (2012), Art Space, Sydney (2011) and the Mori Art Museum, Tokyo (2009).
