Marina Xenofontos
Marina Xenofontos is a sculptor who works with installation, painting, photography, and video. Born in Limassol, Cyprus in 1988, she currently works between Athens, Greece and Paris, France. One of the founding members of the collective and artist-run project space Neoterismoi Toumazou, Xenofontos is known for her practice of reforming found objects and materials, which she pairs with novel constructions like kinetic sculptures, light installations, digital avatars, and their analogue representations. Although these elements are not necessarily connected on a formal level, they are entangled by their idiosyncratic ties in history and politics.
Xenofontos' practice involves physical objects as well as written words and fragmented narratives, acting as a poetic declaration. Her work often documents and exhibits malfunctions from the manufacturing of products, history, and her own practice, affirming them as a breeding ground for further invention. Through an intimate gaze, she views cultural and political symbols, capturing methods for recovering the fantastical, imaginary aspects of culture obscured through historical and ideological recording. Her work provides a unique perspective on cultural and political symbols and challenges viewers to consider the ways in which they shape our understanding of the world around us. Xenofontos has exhibited her work internationally, showcasing her pieces in solo and group exhibitions alike.
