Julie Heffernan was born in Peoria, Illinois, in 1956.
She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in printmaking and painting from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and later pursued a Master of Fine Arts at the prestigious Yale School of Art. Her education laid the foundation for her artistic prowess and unique approach to blending various styles and genres.
Since 1999, Julie Heffernan has showcased her work in over 50 solo exhibitions at museums and various venues in the United States and internationally. Her art can be found in 25 museum and institutional collections, underlining her lasting impact on the art world.
In 2011, Heffernan was elected as a National Academician to the National Academy of Design in New York. In 2014, she joined the Board of Governors. She is a 2017 Fellow of the BAU Institute at the Camargo Foundation in Cassis, France. She was also the featured artist for the 2017 MacDowell Colony. In 2013, Heffernan received a Milton And Sally Avery Fellowship at MacDowell.
Currently, Julie Heffernan serves as a Professor of Fine Arts at Montclair State University and resides in the vibrant city of New York. Her academic role is a testament to her dedication to both creating art and nurturing the next generation of artists.
