Biography of Juliana Huxtable

Juliana Huxtable, born on December 29, 1987, is a multifaceted American artist, writer, performer, and DJ.

Born in Bryan-College Station, Texas, Huxtable was raised by her mother, Kassandra, after her parents' divorce. The artist, who was born intersex, began her transition after completing college. She reflects on grappling with issues of gender conformity and sexual identity from an earlier age.

She moved to New York to study at Bard College, where she graduated in 2010.

Her artistic journey took a different turn when, after working as a legal assistant for the ACLU's Racial Justice Program, Huxtable gained prominence on Tumblr. There, she shared stream-of-consciousness poems and self-portraits exploring fashion and Nuwaubian imagery.

Huxtable's artistic contributions were recognized when she participated in the 2015 New Museum Triennial Surround Audience and the Performa 15 Biennial. Her multidimensional performance at the latter, titled "There Are Certain Facts That Cannot Be Disputed," delved into the intersection of digital information, historical documentation, and cyberspace.

In 2017, Huxtable showcased her first solo exhibition, "A Split During Laughter at the Rally," at Reena Spaulings in New York City. Two years later, the artist received a 2019 United States Artists Fellowship.

Since 2020, Juliana Huxtable has been based in Berlin, Germany.
