Biography of Jadé Fadojutimi
Fadojutimi, born in 1993 in London, resides and works in her hometown. She completed her BA at the Slade School of Art, London, in 2015 and her MA at the Royal College of Art, London, in 2017, receiving the Hine Painting Prize that year.
Utilizing visual elements drawn from twentieth-century painting, including grids, layers, and varied marks, Fadojutimi evokes a perpetual state of change. While her compositions may suggest imagery of plants, microbes, or oceanic vistas, they ultimately gravitate toward abstraction. Termed "environments" by the artist, these intricate arrangements are constructed through layers of oil paint, occasionally intersected by oil pastel lines. Fadojutimi integrates elements of clothing—fabric swatches, stocking shapes, and bows—with indistinct outlines, symbolizing the upheaval of displacement.
Fadojutimi finds inspiration in particular places, cultures, objects, and sounds particularly drawn from Japanese anime, fashion, and soundtracks. Writing plays a significant role in her artistic process; sometimes, she uses it to elucidate the nuances of her paintings, while other times she employs a more poetic approach, running in parallel to her visual work. For Fadojutimi, both her roles as an artist and a writer hold equal importance in her creative practice.
The artist's solo exhibitions include "The Numbing Vibrancy of Characters in Play" at Peer, London, in 2019, and "Yet, Another Pathetic Fallacy" at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, in 2021. Fadojutimi has participated in numerous group exhibitions and biennials such as "Jahresgaben 2020" at Bonner Kunstverein, Bonn, Germany; "The Stomach and the Port," Liverpool Biennial, England (2021); "Mixing It Up: Painting Today" at the Hayward Gallery, London (2021); and "The Milk of Dreams" at the 59th Biennale di Venezia (2022).
