Silke Otto-Knapp
Silke Otto-Knapp is a contemporary artist born in Osnabrück, Germany, in 1970. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Otto-Knapp's primary medium is painting, and her work is known for its focus on dance, stage design, and landscape.
Otto-Knapp studied at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London, where she received a Master of Fine Arts degree in 1999. Her early work consisted of figurative paintings, but she eventually began to explore abstract painting and the relationships between color and form.
In her later works, Otto-Knapp often incorporates elements of performance art and stage design. Her paintings often depict dancers and performers on stage, using a monochromatic color palette that emphasizes the movement and energy of the figures. She is also known for her paintings of landscapes and gardens, which similarly feature a limited color palette and a focus on the interplay of light and shadow.
Otto-Knapp has exhibited her work extensively in galleries and museums around the world, including the Tate Britain in London, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Her work can be found in numerous public and private collections, including the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City.
