Biography of Gavin Bond

Gavin Bond was born in 1970 in London, England. In 1988, Gavin Bond enrolled at Central Saint Martins (CSM), alongside notable alumni such as John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Stella McCartney, Hussein Chalayan, Giles Deacon, and legendary stylist Katie Grand. During his time as a fashion student, Bond received a remarkable opportunity to attend London Fashion Week, which served as a gateway for him to immerse himself into the exhilarating world of backstage fashion shows.

Bond quickly caught the attention of influential fashion editors, including Marion Hume of The Independent. Hume recognized Bond's talent and regularly commissioned his captivating backstage shots for fashion shows in Paris, Milan, and London, establishing him as a respected photographer in the industry.

With the support of John Wolford, Gavin Bond was granted the opportunity to photograph backstage at Vivienne Westwood's renowned "Anglomania" show in March 1993. This experience marked a significant milestone in Bond's career, allowing him to showcase his skills and immerse himself in the world of one of fashion's most iconic designers.

Amidst the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, photographer Gavin Bond made a significant change by leaving the bustling city of New York behind. He sought solace in a peaceful log cabin nestled in the woods, embracing a slower pace of life. Here, Bond seized the opportunity to embark on a long-awaited project: cataloguing his earliest work. 

Gavin Bond’s art style

Bond's photographs are known for their unique blend of authenticity, energy, and intimacy. His ability to establish a rapport with his subjects allows him to capture their true essence, resulting in captivating images. His portfolio showcases diverse subjects, from musicians and actors to athletes and political figures, each portrait infused with his artistic vision and meticulous attention to detail.

In his quest to capture the dynamic atmosphere backstage, Bond employed a simple yet effective technique. He skillfully utilized available light and worked swiftly and unobtrusively to immortalize the moments. His deliberate use of a shallow depth of field enabled him to encapsulate the essence of the scene, whether it was a fleeting glimpse of a designer or a flurry of dresses as models paraded down the runway dressed in Gucci, Galliano, Lagerfeld, Lacroix, Valentino, and Versace.

Such backstage photos were included in the "Gavin Bond: Being There" exhibition at Hamiltons Gallery. The exhibition showcased an extraordinary "grid" comprising of 49 meticulously arranged gelatin silver prints.
