E.J. Bellocq
E.J. Bellocq was an American photographer who lived from the late 19th to early 20th century. He was born in New Orleans in 1873 and received his education at the New Orleans School of Photography.
Bellocq's primary focus in art was on portraits of women, particularly prostitutes working in the brothels of New Orleans. His photographs taken in these brothels depicted women in natural, often revealing poses, creating an intimate atmosphere.
Although Bellocq was relatively unknown during his lifetime, his work gained recognition after his death in 1949. These photographs were restored and first published in the 1970s and became widely known in the art world.
Bellocq's photographs are important cultural artifacts that helped recreate the lives of women in the brothels of New Orleans in the late 19th century. His works demonstrate technique, sensitivity, and emotional depth, which became his hallmark.
