Buhlebezwe Siwani
Buhlebezwe Siwani is a multidisciplinary artist who is primarily known for her work in performance art, installations, and photographic stills. She was born in 1987 in Johannesburg, South Africa, and was raised in Johannesburg, the Eastern Cape, and KwaZulu Natal due to the nomadic nature of her upbringing. Siwani works predominantly in the medium of performance and installations, often incorporating photographic stills and videos of her performances. She uses these images as a representation of her body, which is physically absent from the space.
Siwani completed her BAFA (Hons) at the Wits School of Arts in Johannesburg in 2011 and her MFA at the Michealis School of Fine Arts in 2015. Her work has been exhibited at various venues including the Michaelis Galleries in Cape Town, a site-specific exhibition in collaboration with APEX Art in New York City, 13th Avenue in Alexandra township, Commune 1, and Stevenson in Cape Town.
Siwani currently lives and works between Amsterdam and Cape Town, where she continues to create thought-provoking and innovative works that challenge societal norms and expectations.
