Ayesha Sultana
Ayesha Sultana is an artist who explores space, vision, and form through various mediums, including drawings, paintings, and sculptures. She received her BFA in Visual Arts in 2007 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Art Education from Beaconhouse National University in Lahore, Pakistan. Sultana's early works incorporated human figures and environments from found imagery of Dhaka, Bangladesh. However, her later works focused on repetition and abstraction, which allowed her to experiment with different processes and textures.
One of Sultana's notable works is 'Breath Count' (2019-2020), a series of markings on clay-coated paper that explore the progression of time. She also gained critical acclaim for her graphite drawings, which she often cut or folded into three-dimensional forms to create spatial depth. In 2015-2016, Sultana created sculptural installations for her commission A Space Between Things, which turned the exhibition space into an interactive drawing that responded to the audience's movements.
Sultana's practice continues to incorporate diverse materials and techniques, as seen in her 2019 works Over the Edge and Miasms. She has had solo exhibitions at Experimenter in Kolkata and Galleria Valentina Bonomo in Rome, and has participated in group exhibitions such as the 9th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art and the 11th Gwangju Biennale.
