About the Artwork Yuan Jai

Yuan Jai

Yuan Jai is a Taiwanese artist born in 1941, who is known for her experimentation with representation in Chinese ink painting. Her work draws from antique prototypes and master paintings, interpreting visual traditions by incorporating geometric patterns, vibrant colors, and daily experiences.

Yuan Jai's work is also influenced by Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Cubism, and Surrealism, which she studied in Europe. She uses bright mineral pigments, such as malachite powder and lapis powder, to depict blue-and-green landscapes. Her visual language integrates elements from China's artistic heritage, European paintings she studied, as well as her personal experiences.

Yuan Jai’s recent solo exhibitions include Yuan Jai, Centre Pompidou, Paris, 2020; and A Visionary Mind: The Art of Yuan Jai in a Quarter-Century, Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts, Kaohsiung, 2012.
