Wang Hua
Hua Wang is a Chinese artist born in the autonomous region of Xinjiang in 1990, who currently lives and works in China and Europe. She graduated from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in 2012, and then moved to Jingdezhen, China, the home of porcelain, in 2014. After a year of intensive training at the Sculpture Ceramics Factory's workshop, Hua received an offer from the Royal College of Art in London to continue her study in ceramics and contemporary art, where she received her Masters in Ceramics and Glass in 2019.
Hua's works are inspired by Chinese idioms and allusions, as well as Western visual culture, and are a surreal interpretation of the imperfect physical world. She uses a wide range of different media and methods to translate philosophical ideas, and her works are a fable that expresses her feelings and story. Her practice can be seen as a ceramics testing ground as well as a conceptual laboratory that investigates diverse personal, social, and political themes.
Hua's works reflect her experience of growing up during a period of rapid urbanization, where family stories and social events are interwoven into an autobiographical structure. Her works highlight themes such as unstoppable consumerism and the relentless phenomenon of obsolescence. She considers herself a surreal interpreter of the imperfect physical world and believes that her works are a way of exploring the different characteristics and properties of different materials.
