Biography of Alvaro Barrington
Born in Caracas, Venezuela, in 1983, Alvaro Barrington's formative years were spent in Grenada before he relocated to Brooklyn, New York, at the tender age of eight.
Barrington's artistic journey began at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School and continued at Hunter College in New York. Seeking further artistic exploration, he ventured to London in 2015 to pursue his studies at the renowned Slade School of Fine Art, culminating in a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree in 2017.
In 2017, the artist made a substantial impact with his inaugural solo exhibition at MoMA PS1. The show was a compelling re-creation of his entire London studio within the gallery's walls. His first UK exhibition, "Condo," followed in January 2018 at Emalin in London.
Barrington expanded his artistic horizons in 2019 by co-curating the exhibition "Artists I Steal From" with Julia Peyton-Jones. This collaborative effort showcased works from 48 esteemed artists, including renowned figures like Willem de Kooning, Cy Twombly, and Katharina Grosse. Amidst these celebrated works, Barrington also presented one of his own pieces, titled "Unc you the Plug" (2019).
In 2021, his artistic achievements were recognized when he was selected as one of six Black artists to participate in The Hepworth Wakefield's School Prints project. This initiative aims to bring free art into local primary schools, and Barrington's contribution, "Grandma's Hands" (2020), was a standout piece.
