Vanessa Disler
Vanessa Disler's artistic practice revolves around painting and is influenced by several concerns of Modernism, such as the exploration of abstraction and questions regarding authorship and signature. Her gestural paintings and steel sculptures employ a nuanced approach to expression, transforming visual elements drawn from cultural memory and personal history into motifs and archetypal symbols that inhabit her creations.
Biography of Vanessa Disler
Vanessa Disler was born in 1987 in Vancouver, Canada. Currently, she lives and creates in Berlin, Germany. In 2011, the artist received a BA in Fine Art from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver. Later, in 2015, she attended De Ateliers in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Disler has participated in numerous residencies, including the CAG Field House Residency at Contemporary Art Gallery in Vancouver (2017) and the Western Front Media Residency at Western Front in Vancouver (2018), among others.
Her recent solo exhibitions include "Light Sleeper" at Damien & The Love Guru in Zurich (2022); "Big Naturals" at Damien & The Love Guru in Brussels (2021); "Free Rein" at Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa (2019); "Shadow Work" at WIELS Centre for Contemporary Art in Brussels (2018); "Last Resort" at Kunsthaus Bregenz in Bregenz (2016), among others.
