Biography of Sean Snyder

Sean Snyder was born in Virginia Beach, USA. From 1990 to 1991, he attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. After this, he studied at Boston University (1991-1992) and Städelschule, Hochschule für Bildende Künste in Frankfurt am Main (1993-1999). 

In 2002, he received the DZ Bank Kunststipendium in Germany. In 2006, he was awarded a Grant from the Office for Contemporary Art in Oslo, Norway. 

Sean Snyder's solo exhibitions include "Aurora Borealis" at Galerie Neu in Berlin, "Eye Of The Huracán" at Schloss in Oslo, "Aspect Ratio / Dispositif" at Galerie Chantal Crousel in Paris, "No Apocalypse. Not Now" at Kölnischer Kunstverein in Cologne, and many more. 

Additionally, the artist has participated in group exhibitions, including "The Influencing Machine" at Nicodim Gallery in Bucharest (2019), "Ludwig 30 – Always Contemporary" at Ludwig Muzeum in Budapest (2019), "A Visibility Matrix" at Douglas Hyde Gallery in Dublin (2018), "On Circulation" at Bergen Kunsthall in Bergen (2018), among others.

Currently, Sean Snyder lives in Berlin, Germany, where he continues to work.

Sean Snyder's Art Style

Sean Snyder utilizes the global circulation of data as the foundation of his artistic practice. His primary concern lies in tracing the influence of ideologies on the representational languages of mass media. Through experimentation with multi-layered symbols, Snyder reveals unexpected depths in a deliberately non-didactic manner. His installations systematically dismantle assumptions associated with their subject matter.

By examining representation, his explorations occasionally coalesce into distinct viewpoints, oscillating between reality and fiction. What appears initially comprehensible may reveal greater complexity, while conversely, what seems intricate may ultimately unravel in multifarious yet straightforward ways.
