Pierre Soulages, born in 1919 in Rodez, Aveyron, France, embarked on his artistic journey influenced by the works of Paul Cézanne and Pablo Picasso. Initially, he enrolled at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris but left due to his dissatisfaction with the conventional style. Following his military service during wartime, he pursued further studies at the Fine Arts School of Montpellier.

Establishing a studio in Courbevoie, Paris, Soulages delved into "complete abstraction," with black emerging as his primary and defining color. His groundbreaking approach garnered attention internationally, with exhibitions at prestigious venues like the Venice Biennale in 1954 and showcases at prominent galleries such as the Betty Parsons Gallery in New York and Samuel Kootz's Gallery.

In 1979, Soulages received the esteemed title of Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, recognizing his significant contributions to the arts. A pinnacle of his career came between 1987 and 1994 when he created 104 stained-glass windows for the Abbey of Sainte-Foy in Conques, showcasing his versatility across mediums.

Throughout his life, Soulages remained active in the art world, participating in numerous exhibitions worldwide, solidifying his status as one of the most influential artists of his time.

Employing a technique characterized by the application of thick layers of paint, Soulages utilizes unconventional tools like spoons, tiny rakes, and bits of rubber to manipulate the canvas, employing scraping, digging, or etching motions to achieve desired surface textures.

In his more recent works spanning from 2013 to 2014, Soulages introduced deliberate variations in pigment, blending matte and glossy blacks, as well as experimenting with differing densities of black pigment to add further complexity to his compositions.

Eschewing traditional titles, Soulages uniformly labels his paintings as "Peinture" (Painting), followed by specifications of size and production date, underscoring his focus on the essence of the artistic process over explicit narrative or thematic content.
