ORLAN
Orlan (born Mireille Suzanne Francette Porte) is a French artist born in 1947 in Saint-Étienne, France. She is best known for her work in performance art, which often involves surgical procedures that transform her own body. In her most well-known series, "The Reincarnation of Saint-Orlan," she underwent a series of plastic surgeries that transformed her appearance to resemble famous images of female saints and goddesses from Western art.
Orlan's work has been exhibited widely in France and internationally, including at the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, and the Venice Biennale. She has also published several books and essays on art and feminism, and has been a professor at several universities, including the University of California, Los Angeles and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.
