Michael Ho
Michael Ho, a Dutch-born artist, now resides and works in London. In 2019, he graduated from the Architectural Association. As a second-generation Chinese immigrant, his artwork delves into the experiences of the Chinese diaspora, cultural disparities, and the subsequent rediscovery of culture through his painting practice. He employs a unique painting technique, working from back to front, layering diluted images with defined brushstrokes, blending Eastern traditions with Western aesthetics. Ho's exploration of orientalist imagery and tropes is multifaceted, ranging from playful to political, and from the erotic to the domestic.
His previous solo exhibition with his partner Chiyan Ho, "Kūnlún," was held at V.O Curations in London in 2021. His work has been featured in group exhibitions at various venues, including ICA and Delphian Gallery in London, Gallery Vacancy in Shanghai, Intersticio in Madrid, and Soft Opening in London. Additionally, his film projects have been screened at Piccadilly Circus and the ICA in London. Ho's new video work, commissioned by FVU in London, is part of the group exhibition "Hollow Earth: Art, Caves & the Subterranean Imaginary" at Nottingham Contemporary, which is co-organized with the Hayward Gallery Touring. He is scheduled to hold his first solo exhibition at Gallery Vacancy in Shanghai in 2023.
