Haroon Mirza
Haroon Mirza has garnered global recognition for his installations, which explore the interaction and tension between sound and light waves, as well as electric currents. He creates sculptures, performances, and immersive installations.
Biography of Haroon Mirza
Haroon Mirza was born in London, UK, in 1977. He received a BFA in Painting & Drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2001.
In 2002, he obtained a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting from the Winchester School of Art. Haroon Mirza continued his educational path and received an MA in Design Critical Practice and Theory from Goldsmiths College in London (2006) and an MA in Fine Art from the Chelsea College of Art & Design in London (2007).
Mirza was honored with the Silver Lion for Most Promising Artist in 2011 at the 54th Venice Biennale Illuminations. In 2012, he received the DAIWA Art Prize, followed by the Zurich Art Prize (2013) and the Nam June Paik Art Centre Award (2014). The Calder Prize was bestowed upon him in 2015, and he clinched the Collide International Award in 2017.
His recent solo exhibitions include "|||" at Lisson Gallery in London (2023), "For A Dyson Sphere" at Lisson Gallery in New York (2022), "In the Epoch of Waves" at Max Goelitz in Munich (2022), "Energy/Power" at Max Goelitz in Berlin (2022), "The Wave Epoch" at Browns Brook Street in London (2021), and "The Wave Epoch" at Gnration in Braga (2021).
Haroon Mirza has also participated in group exhibitions, including "The Only Constant" at the New York University Abu Dhabi in Abu Dhabi (2023), "Notations on Time" at Ishara Art Foundation in Dubai (2023), "Utopia" at Lille Triennale in Lille (2022), "FUSO" at Museum of Contemporary Art in Lisbon (2022), "Paracusia: Of Sound and Visions" at Kewenig Gallery in Berlin (2022), among others.
Currently, the artist lives and works in London.
Haroon Mirza's Projects and Performances
Haroon Mirza has partnered with actor, musician, writer, and curator Richard Strange on two significant projects: "A Sleek Dry Yell," a sound and performance piece incorporating texts and performances by Strange, and "The Last Tape," featuring unrecorded lyrics by Ian Curtis, performed by Strange in the manner of Samuel Beckett's "Krapp's Last Tape."
Mirza's recent performances and events include "Modular Opera" (performed with Sarah-Jane-Lewis) for Kunsthalle Praha (2023), "The Three /\/\/'s" at Liverpool Biennale (2021), "Somerset House, ASSEMBLE: Christian Marclay" at Somerset House (2019), among others.
