The artist was born in 1980 in Sindelfingen, Germany. From 2002 to 2009, Wald attended the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe (Germany) in the classes of Prof. Harald Klingelhöller and Prof. Daniel Roth. Additionally, from 2007 to 2009, the artist was a "Meisterschüler" under Prof. Harald Klingelhöller.

In 2009, Johannes Wald received a travel grant from the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Karlsruhe. Two years later, in 2011, he obtained the Debutant Award from the state government of Baden-Württemberg. In 2013, Wald received the Ernst-Rietschel Award for sculpture.
