Johannes Kahrs

Johannes Kahrs is a contemporary German artist born in Bremen in 1965. He studied at the University of Fine Arts in Hamburg from 1985 to 1992.

Kahrs' work primarily focuses on portraiture and figurative painting, often depicting well-known individuals from popular culture and politics. His paintings are characterized by their intense psychological insight and emphasis on lighting and color.

Kahrs has exhibited his work in solo and group shows in Europe and the United States, including at the Kunsthalle Hamburg, the Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt am Main, and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. His work is included in several public collections, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the National Gallery of Canada, and the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. In 2004, he was awarded the renowned ars viva prize for contemporary artists.
