James Metcalf
James Metcalf (1925-2012) was an American sculptor and metalworker known for his mastery of metal and his unique blend of biomorphic surrealism and material obsession. Metcalf worked predominantly with copper, brass, and iron and was deeply influenced by Gothic, Romanesque, and Medieval art, as well as Art Deco and Art Nouveau styles.
Metcalf's art is characterized by its formal elegance and its attention to surface ornament and animal forms. He was deeply interested in ancient Greco-Roman metalwork techniques and drew inspiration from Celtic art. He believed that form should follow material and therefore used both manual and power tools to coax his stylistic forms.
His works were exhibited at Kasmin Gallery, New York, and House of Gaga, Mexico City.
