Biography of Ei Arakawa

Ei Arakawa was born in Fukushima, Japan, in 1977. He arrived in the USA in 1998.

From 2000 to 2004, the artist studied at the School of Visual Arts in NY, obtaining a B.F.A. in Fine Arts. Later, he participated in the Studio Program at the Whitney Museum of American Arts Independent Study Program in New York (2005-2006). Ei Arakawa continued his education at Bard College, receiving an M.F.A. in Film/Video in 2006.

Having made waves across prestigious venues worldwide, Ei Arakawa's art has been presented in Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Germany, South Korea, Poland, Brazil, the USA, and beyond. Notable stops on this artistic odyssey include Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg in Switzerland (2023), Tate Modern in London (2021), the Honolulu Biennial (2019), and the Liverpool Biennial (2018). The artist's work has graced esteemed institutions such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany, and The Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw, Poland, to name just a few.

A significant milestone in Arakawa's career unfolded at the 55th Venice Biennial in 2013. This marked a pivotal moment among a string of prestigious exhibitions, including participation in the Whitney Biennial in New York (2014) and the Gwangju Biennial in South Korea (2014).

Highlighting a commitment to pushing creative boundaries, Ei Arakawa has also participated in renowned events like Performa in New York (2007) and the Echigo-Tsumari Triennial in 2006. Such engagements underscore a dedication to exploring the intersection of contemporary art and global discourse.

Ei Arakawa's recent solo shows include those at Taka Ishii Gallery in Tokyo (2023), Kunsthalle Friart Fribourg in Switzerland (2023), Overduin & Co. in Los Angeles (2022), Turbine Hall at Tate Modern in London (2021), and many more.

Arakawa became a US citizen in 2019 and currently calls the vibrant city of Los Angeles home.
