Charles Harrison
Charles Harrison was an English artist and art historian who made significant contributions to the fields of conceptual art and art criticism. Born in London, he studied art at the Bath Academy of Art in the 1960s, where he developed an interest in Minimalism and Conceptual Art.
In the 1970s, Harrison became a key member of the Art & Language group, which was known for its radical approach to art-making and critique of the art world. He contributed to the group's publications and exhibitions, and his writing on art theory and criticism became influential in its own right.
Harrison's own art practice was also influenced by his interest in conceptual art, and he created works that explored the relationship between art and language, often using text and found objects. He exhibited his work internationally, including in the United States, Europe, and Japan.
Aside from his art practice, Harrison was also a respected art historian and critic. He wrote extensively on contemporary art, including the influential book "Conceptual Art and Painting: Further Essays on Art & Language" (2001). He also taught at various institutions, including the University of California, Los Angeles, and the Open University in the UK.
Harrison's legacy in the art world is marked by his contributions to the development of conceptual art and his critical engagement with the art world. His work continues to influence artists and scholars today.
